A downtown Salt Lake City hotel near the Salt Palace Convention Center
If you're looking for a sophisticated downtown Salt Lake City hotel just a block from the Salt Palace Convention Center and less than an hour from 10 major ski resorts, Hotel Monaco Salt Lake City is the place. Our downtown Salt Lake City hotel is across the street from the Capitol Theatre, a block from Abravanel Hall and two blocks from historic Temple Square. In between, you'll find lively restaurants, clubs and cafes, boutiques and department stores. It's a quick TRAX ride to the Delta Center and shopping at the Gateway. Check out some of our favorite insider tips:
FOR THE ROMANTICS:
Unpack your bags and come downstairs for a glass of wine and a chance to snuggle up in the gorgeous lobby during the Hotel Monaco's evening wine hour. Then, hand-in-hand, explore some of the little secrets our city offers:
- Bambara: Indulge in a romantic dinner at what is widely regarded as one of the best restaurants in the city, just steps from the Hotel Monaco's lobby; or settle into a velvet-upholstered seat at the adjoining Club Bambara and sip a specialty cocktail
- Horse-drawn carriage ride: Have our concierge arrange this for you... In the light summer evening air or in a swirl of snowflakes, it's a magical experience through the streets of the city
- The Red Door: A small, popular martini bar just across from the entrance drive of the hotel
- Martine: Savor the Mediterranean, Moroccan and European influences at this alluring little restaurant in an historic brownstone
- Red Butte Botanical Gardens: Located in the nearby foothills, with a breathtaking view of downtown and the Salt Lake Valley and acres of natural botanical gardens and mountain trails
- Akasha Spa and Salon: Make time for a couple's massage at the city's most cosmopolitan spa
- Utah Opera or Symphony: Enjoy the sounds of a classical music, or for something lighter, try the Tavernacle, a lively piano bar; or, ask about the many clubs around town, including the Zanzibar, for live jazz
FOR THE URBANITES:
Take advantage of our downtown Salt Lake City location for a taste of the arts, independent films, a one-of-a kind bookstore and historic Temple Square.
- Broadway Centre Cinemas: A major venue for January's Sundance Film Festival, where you can take in one of the fine art cinema, independent or foreign films regularly shown here
- Gallivan Plaza: Take in one of the many free Friday night concerts in warmer weather. In the winter, take a spin around the ice on the public skating rink
- Sam Weller's Books: A multi-level bookstore just a stone's throw from the Hotel Monaco. You could spend hours browsing through the two million-plus new and used books on any subject
- Gallery Stroll: The first Friday of each month is Gallery Stroll night, when you can wander in and out of the city's best galleries for a taste of the Salt Lake's eclectic art scene. We like the very hip, 4-level Phillips Gallery for a starter. Ask the concierge for a list of the participating galleries, or pick one up at the Salt Lake Art Center, just two blocks from the Hotel Monaco
- Temple Square: The world headquarters for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a fascinating architectural experience. Although the interior of the Temple is closed to the public, this magnificent structure offers more than enough to appreciate from the exterior. You can, however, enter the Tabernacle where the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sings every Sunday morning. Rehearsals are often open to the public too. Walk through the gardens to the beautiful Beehive House and experience how Brigham Young lived with his family as President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Free tours begin every ten minutes and last about 30 minutes
- Family History Center: The world's foremost library of genealogical records, where you can explore your family tree. Visitors are entirely welcome and staff members will help you with computerized access to your ancestry
FOR THE FAMILY:
Salt Lake City's light rail runs in front of the Hotel Monaco along Main Street and provides fabulous family friendly transportation to major destinations throughout downtown. Other activities the gang will thank you for:
- Energy Solutions Arena: Join 22,000 basketball fans cheering on the Utah Jazz or check out their continuous schedule of nationally touring rock and roll, pop and country/western concerts
- Lamb's Grill Café: Dig into breakfast while sitting at the classic marble counter of the city's oldest restaurant
- Park City: Just a short 30-minute drive. In summer months, take a chair-lift ride to mountain vistas and nature walks. Go for mountain biking, a ride down one of the country's longest alpine slides or a wild zip-cord ride with a 1000-vertical-foot descent. In the winter, there's skiing: three world-class downhill ski areas and nearby Nordic ski centers make for some serious schussing. Or, visit Park City's Olympic Park to tour the ski museum and watch (or try!) ski jumping and the luge/skeleton/bobsled track facilities, all on the site where Olympic athletes train and have competed
- Capitol Theater: Directly across the street from the Hotel Monaco, this historic theater hosts regularly touring Broadway shows, Ballet West and the Salt Lake Opera. Past performances have included The Lion King, Hansel and Gretel, The Music Man and the nationally recognized annual production of The Nutcracker
- Gateway Shopping Center: Ride TRAX to the historic Union Pacific Train depot and enter the open-air Gateway Center for some world-class shopping, the Olympic fountain (where kids love to splash on hot summer days), restaurants, a huge movie theater complex and a major video game arcade
And to round it out — just 15 minutes from the Salt Lake International Airport, the Hotel Monaco is surrounded by many of downtown Salt Lake City's well-known landmarks and destinations, including the aforementioned Temple Square and the Delta Center, as well as:
- Abravanel Hall
- Salt Palace Convention Center
- Salt Lake Art Center
- Memory Grove and City Creek Canyon
- Utah Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Natural History, both on the nearby University of Utah campus
For skiers, the Hotel Monaco is less than an hour's drive from ten major ski resorts.
